Party Themes - Introduction

Whether we acknowledge it or not, every party has a theme. Even the after work happy hour has a theme… “We’re happy to see another day of hard work come to an end. Therefore, we celebrate!”

When it comes to having parties, themes are usually more recognizable and based on the theme parties generally take on a life of their own. There is no question about how to decorate or even dress for a party with a Valentine’s theme. Who ever heard of a

Halloween party without at least one carved pumpkin, fake spider web, ghost or goblin? Nearly every New Year’s Eve party has noise makers, confetti, and champagne or sparkling cider; and what’s a Christmas party without mistletoe?

Setting the theme for your party is sometimes the most difficult task of all, the choices are limitless. Once the theme is set, the fun begins. Children and adults enjoy Star Trek parties and there is nothing more fun for the little ones than a party with a Sesame Street or Sponge Bob Square Pants theme.

Party themes vary as trends change and fads come and go, but there are some tried and true themes that are a hit with nearly every generation. A party with a beach theme is one that is sure to bring out the surfer spirit of even the stuffiest of guests. Although he left the building in 1977, Elvis Presley will forever be the guest of honor at any 1950’s theme party. The Austin Powers films brought back the whimsy of the 1960s. Suddenly it seems as though sixties, seventies and even eighties parties are becoming all the rage. Then there are the period party themes. For generations, college fraternities held toga parties like the one immortalized in one of John Belushi’s earliest films, National Lampoon’s Animal House where everyone came wrapped in sheets, reminiscent of ancient Roman togas.

Preparing for a party with a movie theme is sometimes more fun than the actual party itself. Finding old movie posters and props is not as difficult one might imagine especially if there is a vintage shop in the area. The host of a movie theme party should pick a movie genre or era rather than just say “I’m having a movie party.” There are simply too many choices and your décor could become a bit schizophrenic if there are no parameters. If you choose to host a movie theme party, why not go for a specific set of movies – like horror films or space flicks?

Some of the most successful parties have color themes. The host selects a color based on a particularly significant event or object. All of the decorations are that color. All invited guests are asked to wear that color as well. While some people may think it a bit odd to request that guests wear a particular color, most invitees like the notion, and eagerly accept the challenge to be different, yet stylish in the color du jour.
